Expanded ATAGI recommendations on winter COVID-19 booster doses

People aged 16 to 64 who have a medical condition that increases their risk of severe COVID-19 illness and people with disability with significant or complex health needs, will be recommended to receive a winter booster vaccination dose from 30 May 2022.

The additional winter COVID-19 dose can be:

  • given from 4 months or longer after receipt of a previous booster dose of a COVID-19
    vaccine OR
  • given from 3 months after a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection if this has occurred since
    the previous booster

Additional Groups Now Eligible for the Winter Dose (4th Dose)

ATAGI  now recommends that additional population groups should receive a winter booster dose, 4 months after their first booster dose:

  • People aged 16-64 years who have complex, chronic or severe conditions that are considered to increase their risk of severe illness from COVID-19 (Refer to the Table below).

Vaccine type for Winter dose

Pfizer or Moderna are the preferred vaccines for the winter dose.

Can I get the Flu Shot on the same day?

Yes, a COVID-19 vaccination and influenza (flu) vaccination can be given together on the same day. Government guidelines for vaccination have been updated and this has now been approved.

After Your Vaccination

After receiving any vaccine, you may experience minor side effects. Most side effects are mild and last no more than a few days.

Common reactions to COVID-19 vaccinations include:

  • a sore arm
  • headache
  • low level fever
  • muscle pain
  • chills
  • tiredness, or
  • joint pain.
